Level-up List


What’s a Level-Up List? It’s a mixture of difficult challenges in the style of Joel Runyon’s Impossible List and a look at the simpler skills and experiences I’m currently working on. As I complete things, they’ll be crossed off or replaced with harder challenges.


Currently In Progress (May 2017):

  • Publish a Medium blog post on a machine learning project. (Sneak peek: Naive Bayes, Twitter, and politics)
  • Squat my body weight
  • See a full solar eclipse (Going to Nashville in August)
  • Learn Ruby on Rails

Travel/Adventure:

  • See a full solar eclipse
  • See the Northern Lights
  • Longboard in Iceland
  • Go backpacking in Europe
  • Swim in the Indian Ocean
  • Go surfing
  • Go snowboarding, fall, and then get up again
  • Hike in New Zealand
  • Go on a long road trip with a friend
  • Have a memorable experience in all 50 states [12/50]
  • Jump off a cliff into deep water below (conquer two fears)
  • Go to another country in order to give a talk
  • Speak no English on a trip that is over a week long
  • See a waterfall
  • Go zip-lining
  • Row a boat on the Boston Harbor
  • Go ice climbing (like, with ice picks. I climbed a glacier once but that's not what I mean.)
  • Visit Diocletian's Palace in Split, Croatia
  • Show my mom the best of Italy or Spain
  • Visit Tokyo and Kyoto
  • Take a train to Maine
  • Go dog sledding in Alaska or Canada
  • Return to Uruguay
  • Go to a dark sky site for star-gazing
  • Go on a trip outside the country with friends (Montreal, July 2015)
  • Eat a steak in Argentina (Buenos Aires & El Calafate, July 2016)
  • Spontaneously buy a plane ticket to a random destination and use it (Italy, August 2016)

Fitness and Health:

  • Meditate every day for 30 days
  • Squat my body weight
  • Bench press 70 pounds
  • Deadlift 1.5x my body weight
  • Do a pull-up
  • Successfully walk across a slackline
  • Run 3 miles (then do it in 20 minutes)
  • Take a self-defense class
  • Learn a martial art
  • Learn to cook 10 healthy dinners without looking at recipes (10/10)
  • Go indoor rock climbing (September 14, 2014)
  • Complete a Spartan Race, Tough Mudder, or Warrior Dash (Tough Mudder New England 2015)
  • Track protein consumption for 14 days (28/14)
  • Part 1: Acquire a taste for fish. Part 2: Order it at a restaurant (June 20, 2015: ate cod at Rowe's Wharf Grill)

  • Contribute to an open source project on Github
